Pau Castle
Pau Béarn is located in the southwest of France near the Spanish border and the Atlantic Ocean. Located on a small hill, the castle allowed to control the Gave de Pau, the river running through the city center from the Pyrenees.
These are the viscounts of Béarn, at the time of their alliance with Aragon, who did build this castle in the XI century. Initially wood and a certain simplicity, it has since undergone major changes. There is a dungeon in particular from a height of 33 m, brick built in the XIV by Gaston Phoebus, a powerful count who resist face the kings of France and England. Over the centuries, this building evolved from a fortress of war into a pleasure residence for the royal family. This is born one of the greatest kings of France and Navarre in 1553, King Henry IV.
Visiting this place can enjoy a magnificent view of the mountains. Today is a national museum where they discover works preserved since the time of Henry IV.
To get to Pau via the A64 motorway, take exit 10 and follow signs to the city center and the "National Museum of the Castle".
By bus, take line 02, 05 or 11 and get off at "Money".
